Azle ISD Partners with Global K9 Systems for Firearm Detection Services

November 2023

Azle ISD has retained Global K9 Systems (GK9) to provide an additional layer of security to our secondary campuses by using canine screening for guns, narcotics, explosives, and other devices or substances that can cause harm.

This partnership is in addition to the safety and security measures Azle ISD already has in place such as armed officers at all campuses, CrisisAlert push button badges for employees, secured entry vestibules, locked classroom doors, interior and exterior security cameras, vape detectors, etc.

Azle ISD will alternate narcotics and firearm dogs throughout the school year at our secondary campuses and utilize the explosive sniffing dog on a call-out basis, as needed.

GK9 is one of the few private firearm detection canine security companies in the U.S. They specialize in firearm detection but also provide detection services for explosives, drugs, and other substances.

Firearm detection dogs, also known as gun-sniffing dogs, are specially trained canines used to locate firearms, ammunition, gunpowder, gunpowder residue, cleaning solvents, and oils. They are often used at school campuses to prevent gun-related incidents and maintain public safety. These dogs have a keen sense of smell allowing them to detect the unique scents emitted by firearms and their components, even in concealed or hard-to-reach areas like school lockers or backpack compartments.

When working, the dog will typically sniff the air and surrounding areas to pick up any firearm-related scents. Once the dog detects a scent, it will follow the scent trail to its source, alerting its handler by sitting, lying down, or using another predetermined signal. The handler will then assess the situation and take appropriate action, such as conducting a more thorough search or contacting law enforcement.

The dogs act as a visual deterrent as well. When young people see searches being done, they may think twice about bringing a firearm to school.

Frank Keller, founder and CEO of Global K9 Systems, praised Azle school officials for recognizing the need for a multi-layered security plan. He said, “Unfortunately, the statistics show the crucial need for firearm detection measures on school campuses. Students deserve every possible effort to be made for their safety. We believe these remarkable dogs can reduce those numbers and save lives.”
