What is SHAC?

• A group of individuals that represent the segments of the Coordinated School Health Model recruited or appointed by the School Board of trustees.

SHACS provide recommendations on school health and safety as necessary to be in compliance with state and federal law and as beneficial to the students of the district.

• SHACS DO NOT HAVE LEGAL AUTHORITY

Mission

The Azle ISD School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) mission is to promote sound school policies and practices that will improve and maintain the health and wellness of its students, faculty, and community.

Vision

We envision a future where every child in the Azle ISD area has the opportunity to live a healthful lifestyle, to be health and physically-educated, and to transfer that knowledge into action.

Goals

Support a healthy and safe school environment that fosters learning.

Healthy minds and bodies will be promoted through effective school health education and services.

Academic success will be achieved by empowering our faculty to model healthy behaviors.

Champion the practice of Coordinated School Health (CHS) by effectively implementing the eight components of CSH:

  • Health Education  • Counseling, Psychological, and Social Services
  • Physical Education   •Healthy School Environment
  • Health Services   •Health Promotion for the Staff
  • Nutrition   • Family/Community Involvement

What is a Coordinated School Health Model?

  Examples of Health Statues that SHAC provides guidance
(this would be components of needs assessment):

• Providing direction for the district Wellness Policy (The Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of  2004) Federal Law
• Recommendations for district Coordinated Health curriculum which must address prevention of obesity, cardiovascular disease and type 2 Diabetes for grades K-8th.
• Providing published information in student handbook and on district website for; required 30 min day of elementary/middle/jr. high students of PE, number of times SHAC meets per year, district policy of vending machines guideline, penalties for use of tobacco products on school campuses
• School health policy of medication administration, care for students with diabetes, asthma action plan/anaphylaxis. Dietary supplements, vision, hearing and spinal screenings, ancathosis nicragens, immunization requirements posted on website
• Emergency Response/multi-hazard emergency operation plan
• Pan Flu Preparedness
• Daily recess recommendations for elementary students
• Physical fitness assessment and provide results to parents
• AED program established, annual training program implemented
• Random steroid testing
• Parenting and Paternity Awareness (PAPA) program
